Walking, as I was,
Alone one day, and lo,
The light had gone.
Darkness had come,
And everywhere, oh,
Everywhere it was.
The birds ceased their
Singing, and my eyes
Beheld not a thing.
No sound was there
Upon my ears, and
Lonely was the world.
And then, the cold,
Oh, colder it never
Has been.
It was day, but
The night, black
As pitch, had set in.
And far, off far in
The distance, a
Light, a warmth was
Shining, shining.
In no hurry,
I continued on
My way, now
Walking toward
The light, the
Warmth from
Whence came a
Sound, the clear
Ringing of a bell.
Closer, as I came,
The sound was
Not a bell.
A voice, a voice it
Was, clear, beautiful,
And ringing.
It spoke in a language
I could not understand,
But I heard it all
The same.
"Child, oh, child,"
It sang, "quickly
Now, quickly, for
Night closes
Fast, and hope
Flees before thy
Feet."
And unbeknownst to
Me, my pace
Quickened, and
I sought that light
As though despereate
For more.
"Child, oh, child
Hurry, must hurry,
For the night
Closes fast, and
Faith is losing
Hold in thy heart."
Again, I sped up,
Now jogging toward
The light, frantic
Lest I be late
And lose sight
Of it.
Aware, now, of
Another keeping
Pace with me,
I stopped, curious.
It stopped as well.
"Who, or what, are
you?" I asked.
"Your love, your
Love am I, and
With me you
Must run.
Alone you shall
Lose the way."
Said I, "The light
I plain to see,
and-lose the way?
I think not."
And on ran I,
Trying to forget
My love.
And, try as I may
To outrun him,
He kept pace
With me.
"Follow me not,
I can manage
Alone!" said I.
"My love, my love,
alone you shall fail!
With me you must
Run, or lose sight
Of the way."
And the light,
It sang again,
"Child, oh, child,
With him you
Must run, for
Night closes
Fast, and love
Is the only light."
And I saw the
Light, which I
Had pursued so
Blindly, fade.
"My love, my love,"
I cried, "my heart
Has been cold,
And with you
I shall run,
Run until I can
Run no longer."
He smiled, and I
Saw, for we together
Made light, our
Love shining,
Shining like the
Old light never
Had.
"My love, my love,
Let us run, for
Night is here.
And we linger."
He said, "Oh love,
My love, together
We shall run,
For we are
The light, and
By us, many shall
See, and follow."
Then, the voice,
The voice, it called
Forth once more,
"Child, oh, child,
Now run on
With him, for
Night cannot
Smother the
Love 'twixt you
Two."
So we ran,
And were the
Light, and many
Saw, and followed.
And my heart
Was at peace,
For love was
My light.
